The Philippine government expressed hope on Tuesday for an impartial impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte, amidst rising concerns over a recent shift in Senate leadership. The situation has captured public attention, as the proceedings could significantly impact the country’s political landscape.
Claire Castro, the Palace Press Officer, emphasized that the impeachment case is currently under the Senate’s jurisdiction. She made it clear that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. intends to maintain a neutral stance and refrain from influencing the proceedings. Her statements aimed to assure the public of the executive’s commitment to non-interference in legislative matters.
“Our hope is that if the case proceeds to the Senate, the senators will act as fair judges,” Castro remarked during a press briefing. She underscored the importance of fairness in the trial, highlighting its significance for the Filipino people. Her comments reflect the administration’s desire to ensure that the impeachment process adheres to democratic principles.
Further clarifying the separation of powers, Castro noted that the initiation of the impeachment process by the House of Representatives was within its constitutional mandate. She reiterated that the President’s role does not extend to involvement in such legislative functions, thereby reinforcing the independence of the legislative branch.
