Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, has extended an invitation to young individuals from various backgrounds, urging them to join the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). At the Young PAP’s 40th anniversary celebration, Wong emphasized the importance of diverse ideas and perspectives within the party, highlighting that it does not seek conformity in thought among its members.

Wong underscored the necessity of intellectual diversity for the PAP’s ongoing renewal and its ability to tackle future challenges faced by Singapore. He encouraged those who care about the nation’s future to share their ideas and engage with the party, even if they hold differing views on certain issues from the PAP’s stance. His appeal aims to dispel the perception among some young Singaporeans that the PAP, as an established entity, no longer requires new members to contribute to its evolving agenda.

Addressing the global context, Wong pointed out that Singapore, despite its achievements, should still be considered a global “underdog.” He argued that the nation’s continued success depends on each generation stepping up with fresh leadership and innovative approaches. He cautioned against adopting divisive and confrontational political strategies, advocating instead for problem-solving through cooperation, practical solutions, and consensus-building, rather than inciting public discord or political polarization.

In conjunction with the anniversary, the event also saw the inauguration of the Young PAP Academy. This initiative aims to equip young activists with leadership skills and mentorship opportunities. Additionally, the YP 40 Under 40 Fellowship was introduced, offering grants of S$5,000 to support community initiatives spearheaded by young members of the party, further encouraging youth engagement and innovation within Singapore’s political sphere.
