In a historic move, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to make an official visit to Timor-Leste on July 2 and 3, marking the first time a leader from Singapore has traveled to the Southeast Asian nation. During his visit, PM Wong will engage in high-level discussions with Timor-Leste’s President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. A significant highlight of the trip will be the presentation of the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar) to PM Wong, a gesture recognizing Singapore’s ongoing support for Timor-Leste’s development and its integration into the ASEAN community.
The visit underscores the robust partnership between Singapore and Timor-Leste, which has been cultivated over the years through various initiatives. Singapore has consistently contributed to Timor-Leste’s growth, providing training programs, technical aid, and peacekeeping efforts since the early days of the latter’s independence.
