As they prepare for consecutive ASEAN chairmanships, Singapore and Thailand have pledged to enhance their bilateral and regional partnerships. Singapore is set to assume the chairmanship in 2027, followed by Thailand in 2028. This commitment to collaboration was underscored during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held on September 2 in Bangkok. It marked the first face-to-face meeting between Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, as well as the first such bilateral retreat in over a decade. Both leaders highlighted the robust nature of their countries’ relations and set forth a multi-year agenda aimed at ensuring continuity in their leadership roles within ASEAN.
Key areas of cooperation discussed included artificial intelligence, the digital and green economies, and enhancing energy resilience. The leaders also focused on strengthening food security, connectivity, and defense and security measures while agreeing to tackle transnational crime together. They reiterated their commitment to a rules-based international order and advocated for greater ASEAN regional integration. A significant aspect of their energy collaboration is the support for the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project, a venture that enables Singapore to import renewable hydropower from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia.
In addition to energy, the leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing social sector development between the two nations. This agreement includes the exchange of insights and research on social welfare policies and encourages cooperation among relevant institutions. This move is expected to foster deeper understanding and shared progress in social development strategies.
Economic ties between Singapore and Thailand continue to be robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Moreover, Singapore has consistently been Thailand’s leading source of foreign direct investment for the past three years. The depth of economic engagement underscores the importance of their cooperation and the potential for future growth as both countries lead ASEAN in the coming years.
