The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has reached a significant milestone in its naval modernization efforts with the launch of its second Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV), named Valour. This event took place just nine months following the introduction of the first ship in the series, Victory. The launch ceremony was held at Benoi Shipyard, where ST Engineering’s CEO, Vincent Chong, noted that the experience gained from constructing Victory allowed Valour to be completed three months ahead of schedule. This achievement underscores ongoing enhancements in production efficiency, which are expected to benefit the remaining vessels in the class.
These new MRCVs are set to replace the aging Victory-class missile corvettes, providing the navy with advanced capabilities. Designed to integrate seamlessly with various unmanned systems, these vessels are versatile and can undertake multiple mission profiles. The fleet will eventually include ships named Victory, Valour, Vigilance, Valiant, Vigour, and Vengeance, with deliveries scheduled to commence progressively from 2028.
During the ceremony, K. Shanmugam, Coordinating Minister for National Security, highlighted the critical nature of maritime security in light of growing global tensions and disruptions affecting major sea lanes like the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the new vessels, with an operational range of approximately 7,000 nautical miles and an endurance of over 21 days at sea, are essential for safeguarding Singapore’s maritime interests.
Construction is already underway for the third and fourth ships in the series. Shanmugam underscored Singapore’s robust capability in designing, building, and maintaining cutting-edge naval warships domestically, a testament to decades-long investments in the nation’s defense sector. This project also involves complex systems integration tasks, including managing power, cooling, and various mission module needs, as detailed by the Defence Science and Technology Agency.
Lieutenant-Colonel Timothy Low, a seasoned navy veteran with 19 years of service and former commander of the missile corvette RSS Vigilance, will lead the crew of Valour as its commanding officer. He expressed his commitment to fostering a pioneering spirit among his team to help shape the future of the Republic of Singapore Navy.
