During their annual leaders’ retreat in Jakarta, President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore have formalized a series of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to enhance the export of electricity across their borders. The agreements, a significant move in regional energy cooperation, involve key players such as Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, which has partnered with notable Singaporean entities including Keppel Electric, Sembcorp Industries, and Singapore Energy Interconnections. These partnerships are aimed at fostering the electricity trade between Indonesia and Singapore.
An essential component of the collaboration is a strategic roadmap developed by Danantara in conjunction with the Singaporean government. This roadmap is designed to streamline future negotiations and ensure the effective implementation of upcoming projects. Singapore has identified this initiative as a crucial advancement in the development of the ASEAN Power Grid, recognizing Indonesia’s substantial potential in renewable energy resources.
In a notable aspect of this cooperation, Sembcorp, in alliance with Indonesia’s INA sovereign fund and the renewable energy firm SESNA, is set to embark on a solar power project in Central Sulawesi. This project, valued at $210 million, will feature a solar capacity of 200 megawatts and an 80 megawatt-hour battery storage system. Such developments underscore the commitment to sustainable energy solutions and the enhancement of regional energy trade.
While these agreements mark a significant step forward, Indonesia is currently engaged in ongoing discussions concerning electricity pricing, which must be finalized before the commencement of exports. For its part, Singapore has outlined its intentions to import 6 gigawatts of low-carbon electricity by the year 2035, with an anticipated 3.4 gigawatts expected to be sourced from Indonesia. This ambitious plan highlights the countries’ mutual dedication to advancing clean energy and regional cooperation.
