Airlines Face Costs as Boeing 737 Max Fuselage Inspections Mandated

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a directive for airline operators to inspect Boeing 737 Max jets for potential structural cracks in the fuselage. This measure addresses concerns about a specific component known as the “bear strap,” which plays a pivotal role in supporting the fuselage near the aircraft’s exit doors. The inspection order applies to approximately 471 aircraft, with the process slated to commence in September.

This safety precaution comes in the wake of similar issues discovered in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models. The Next Generation aircraft had previously shown signs of cracking in the same fuselage component, leading to mandatory inspections. Although no such problems have been reported in the 737 Max series, the regulators are urging caution due to the similar design and manufacturing techniques shared between the two aircraft types.

Regulators have emphasized the potential risks should these cracks go unnoticed. If left unchecked, such structural weaknesses could compromise the integrity of a major component of the aircraft. Boeing has been proactive in addressing the matter since first identifying the potential issue in 2019 and is collaborating with airlines to ensure that inspections are carried out. The aim is to detect any signs of wear before they develop into critical safety concerns.

This latest round of inspections adds to the ongoing examination of the 737 Max, which has faced extensive scrutiny following previous safety challenges. The aircraft model drew significant attention after being grounded worldwide due to two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. These incidents raised broader questions about the safety standards and manufacturing quality of Boeing’s aircraft, prompting regulatory bodies to adopt a more vigilant oversight approach.
