Singapore and Germany have taken a significant step towards enhancing their strategic partnership by agreeing to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), industrial technology, and innovation. This development emerged after a meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on October 27, where both leaders underscored the transformative potential of AI across various industries.
The updated roadmap builds upon a previous agreement from 2024 and focuses on key areas such as industrial AI, the digital economy, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies. The collaboration aims to expand the use of industrial AI in sectors like manufacturing, robotics, and logistics, while also addressing AI safety and security to ensure responsible and human-centered deployment.
Additionally, the Singapore-Germany Year of Innovation will see enhanced research collaboration, with joint projects spanning AI, semiconductors, quantum technology, space, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing. This effort seeks to leverage existing academic and research partnerships to accelerate technological development and innovation.
Beyond technological cooperation, the two countries are also looking to bolster economic ties between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union. Singapore intends to collaborate with Germany during its 2027 ASEAN chairmanship to promote regional cooperation, including pursuing an ASEAN-EU free trade agreement and greater integration of digital systems.
The meeting also addressed regional energy connectivity and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure, such as subsea cables and pipelines. Germany’s support for Singapore’s voluntary initiative on this matter highlights their mutual commitment to international law and a rules-based international order.
