Singapore and Luxembourg are looking to deepen their collaboration in cutting-edge fields such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and space and satellite communications. This move is part of an effort to bolster their longstanding partnership. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has pointed out that both countries face similar challenges, being small states with limited domestic markets and scarce natural resources. However, he noted that they have successfully leveraged their openness and international networks to become significant financial and business centers catering to larger regional markets.

Highlighting the robust economic connections between the two nations, Wong mentioned that Luxembourg holds the position of the largest European Union investor in Singapore. Conversely, Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second most significant investment destination within the EU. In addition to these economic ties, the countries are also focusing on enhancing the relationship between ASEAN and the European Union. Both Singapore and Luxembourg are advocates of regional integration and are committed to maintaining an open, rules-based international framework.

During an official visit from September 6 to 8, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden met with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their talks encompassed geopolitical developments as well as strategies to advance stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law. This visit is particularly noteworthy as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Luxembourg. The establishment of Luxembourg’s first resident embassy in Singapore is seen as a robust indication of its dedication to fostering deeper engagement with Singapore and the broader region.

Frieden’s itinerary also includes delivering the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, where he is expected to address the theme of Europe’s role and autonomy within the evolving global landscape. This engagement underscores the importance of understanding and adapting to the shifts occurring on the international stage, particularly as they pertain to Europe’s influence and independence.
